Size matters for a practical reason. Smaller aggregate presents more surface area per unit volume, so it typically requires more cement paste to coat — meaning a 10mm mix generally carries a higher paste demand than an equivalent 20mm mix. What it gives back is placement: it moves into tighter spaces and around closer reinforcement.
In Indian construction trade usage, terms such as metal, blue metal or jelly are commonly used for crushed stone aggregate, and 10mm metal generally refers to this product. Terminology varies by region and application, so confirm the size specification rather than relying on trade names alone when ordering.
IS 383:2016 sets grading limits for coarse aggregate by sieve analysis, defining the percentage of material expected to pass each sieve for a given nominal size. Well-graded aggregate generally produces better workability and more consistent results than poorly graded material. Concrete mix designs commonly combine two nominal sizes — typically 20mm and 10mm in proportion — to achieve a combined grading curve that neither delivers alone. This is routine at RMC plants and is the main reason 10mm is ordered alongside 20mm rather than instead of it.
Beyond grading, coarse aggregate for structural concrete is generally assessed on particle shape (flakiness and elongation), cleanliness and freedom from deleterious material, water absorption, specific gravity, and mechanical performance through crushing, impact and abrasion testing, using the relevant IS 2386 methods.
10mm aggregate is used where stone size is the deciding factor — concrete that must reach into confined sections, place around dense reinforcement, or finish to a fine surface. 10mm is not a general substitute for 20mm: for standard slabs, beams, foundations and mass pours, 20mm is typically the more economical and appropriate choice. Many projects need both.
Smaller aggregate can improve placement through tight bar spacing where mix design and member geometry require it. IS 456:2000 limits maximum aggregate size relative to member dimension and bar spacing.
Slabs, screeds, lintels, sunshades and chajjas. Section thickness is conventionally kept to several times the maximum aggregate size, which commonly rules 20mm out of genuinely thin work.
Precast production frequently uses smaller aggregate for mould fill, edge definition and surface quality on faces that remain exposed.
