What Is Plaster Sand? What Is P-Sand?

Plaster Sand is sand classified to meet IS 1542:1992's requirements for use in plaster mortar — distinct from concrete-grade sand governed by IS 383:2016.

IS 1542:1992 recognises natural sand, crushed stone sand and crushed gravel sand as eligible sources, provided the material meets the standard's grading and cleanliness requirements — meaning plaster sand is properly understood as a grading and cleanliness specification, not a single fixed raw material.

Why Plastering Needs a Different Grading

A thin, trowel-applied layer behaves differently.

Plastering is a thin, trowel-applied layer, and the sand's particle-size distribution has a direct effect on finish, workability and cracking risk in a way that matters less in a thick structural pour.

IS 1542:1992 requires sand for plaster to be hard, durable and clean, with combined clay, silt, dust and organic impurities not exceeding 5% by mass. Grading is established by sieve analysis under IS 2386 (Part 1), with a minimum fineness modulus of 1.4 for crushed stone or crushed gravel sand and 1.5 for natural sand. The limit on material passing the 150-micron sieve is relaxed to 20% specifically for crushed sources, since crushed rock fines behave differently from the clay-bearing fines typical of natural sand.

A controlled amount of fine material is expected, not eliminated. IS 1542 sets a minimum fineness modulus and a maximum fines limit — it does not require zero fines. Concrete-grade M-Sand is not automatically the same as plaster-grade sand; the two are classified against different targets.

Plaster Sand vs M-Sand

Plaster Sand and M-Sand belong to the same broad material family — crushed stone fine aggregate — classified against two different targets: IS 383's Zone II for structural concrete, and IS 1542's finer, differently-fined envelope for plastering. OM Group manufactures both, produced and graded for their respective applications.

Plaster Sand vs Washed Sand

A process and a specification.

"Washed" describes a processing stage; "plaster-grade" describes a grading specification. Washed material may or may not meet IS 1542's grading requirements on its own — washing affects cleanliness and fines content, not particle-size distribution by itself. Plaster Sand vs Concrete Sand

Plaster Sand vs Stone Dust

Not a substitute, under any circumstance.

Stone dust and quarry dust are the uncontrolled fine by-product of crushing, not classified to any grading standard, and not a substitute for Plaster Sand under any circumstance. Substituting dust for graded plaster sand produces unpredictable water demand, poor workability, and a compromised, often cracked finish — a costlier failure to redo than most structural grading errors, since it's visible on the finished wall.
