The figure refers to nominal size, not a guarantee that every particle measures 20mm. IS 383:2016, the Indian standard for aggregates in concrete, specifies coarse aggregate in nominal sizes of 10, 12.5, 16, 20, 40 and 63mm.
20mm is commonly specified because it balances two competing requirements. Larger aggregate has less surface area per unit volume, so it generally requires less cement paste to coat, which tends to make it more economical per cubic metre than smaller sizes. At the same time it remains small enough to place through the reinforcement spacing found in conventional members. Where that balance does not hold — thin sections, congested steel, or a specification that says otherwise — a different size is used.
In Indian construction trade usage, terms such as metal, blue metal or jelly are commonly used for crushed stone aggregate, and 20mm metal generally refers to this product. Terminology varies by region and application, so confirm the size specification rather than relying on trade names alone when ordering.
This causes more ordering confusion than any other point on this page. Single-size aggregate of nominal size 20mm describes material where the bulk passes the 20mm sieve and is largely retained on the sieve below it — a narrow band of one size. Graded aggregate of nominal size 20mm describes material containing a designed distribution of sizes below 20mm as well, within the limits IS 383:2016 sets for graded material.
Crushing plants generally produce single-size grades, which are then blended in proportion at the mix design stage to reach the combined grading a concrete design requires. This is why RCC work is commonly supplied as separate 20mm and 10mm deliveries rather than one pre-blended product, and why a mix design specifies proportions rather than a single material.
If your specification calls for graded aggregate rather than single-size, state that requirement with your enquiry so the material and quotation can be confirmed accordingly.
IS 383:2016 sets grading limits for coarse aggregate by sieve analysis, defining the percentage of material expected to pass each sieve for a given nominal size, with separate limit sets for single-size and graded material. The standard also includes requirements relating to particle shape, including flakiness and elongation, cleanliness and freedom from deleterious material, water absorption and specific gravity, and mechanical performance assessed through crushing, impact and abrasion testing. For context, IS 456:2000 constrains the maximum nominal size of coarse aggregate against the member being cast. The limits generally applied are:
20mm is commonly suitable for conventional reinforced-concrete members when member dimensions, reinforcement spacing, cover and the approved project specification permit it. Congested reinforcement and genuinely thin sections generally require a smaller size.
One practice worth naming: replacing a specified aggregate size with 40mm simply to reduce material cost may conflict with the project specification or applicable size limitations. Blending leftover sizes on site to extend a stockpile produces an untested gradation with unpredictable water demand and workability. Final selection should follow the approved design and mix requirements, and any deliberate blending belongs in a designed mix trial.
Aggregate buyers order in different units depending on local trade practice and project documentation. In Goa and Maharashtra, brass and trips are common in the trade, while mix designs, specifications and quotations often run in cubic metres or tonnes. Converting before you enquire avoids quoting errors.
