M-Sand, or manufactured sand, is fine aggregate produced by crushing rock and screening it to sand size. It is used in concrete, RCC, ready-mix concrete and masonry work in place of, or alongside, natural sand. Aggregate is divided by particle size. Material retained on the 4.75 mm sieve is coarse aggregate — the 6mm, 10mm, 12.5mm and 20mm grades. Material passing 4.75 mm is fine aggregate. Sand, whether natural or manufactured, is fine aggregate.
The 2016 revision of IS 383, the Indian Standard for aggregates in concrete, explicitly recognises crushed stone sand alongside natural and mixed sand, with grading and fines provisions specific to it. Manufactured sand is not a substitute standing outside the standard — it is a recognised category within it.
What separates manufactured sand from crusher dust is the screening and classification stage. Crushing alone produces an uncontrolled range of fine material. Manufactured sand is classified to a fine-aggregate grading, which is what makes it usable in a mix design.
In trade usage, M-Sand is also called manufactured sand, crushed stone sand or crushed sand. These refer to the same material.
Sand terminology in Indian construction is inconsistent, and the wrong choice is expensive — concrete-grade sand used for plaster leaves a rough, high-rebound finish; plaster-grade sand used in structural concrete costs strength.

M-Sand is not stone dust. Both come out of a crusher, but stone dust is the uncontrolled fine fraction. M-Sand is screened and classified to a grading. Substituting one for the other changes water demand unpredictably.
M-Sand is not P-Sand. P-Sand is a finer grade of manufactured sand, processed and graded for plastering under a different standard.
M-Sand and washed sand are not opposites. M-Sand describes what the material is made from; washed describes how it has been processed. Manufactured sand can be washed — the two terms answer different questions.

IS 383:2016 classifies fine aggregate into four grading zones, Zone I (coarsest) to Zone IV (finest), determined by sieve analysis. The decisive measurement is the percentage passing the 600 micron sieve. Zone II is the zone generally specified for structural concrete — coarse enough to keep water demand down, fine enough for cohesion and finish.
A grading zone is a test result, not a permanent property of a product.
Sieve analysis on a sample places that material in a zone. Manufactured sand commonly falls in Zone II, or between Zone II and Zone III, depending on the feed rock and how effectively the fine fraction is classified. Holding a zone consistently is an outcome of process control, which is why grading is confirmed against current test data rather than fixed on a datasheet.
If your mix design specifies a zone, say so with your enquiry and current grading information can be confirmed for the material being supplied.

Sand quality is often quoted as "low silt" — but silt is the natural-sand parameter. For M-Sand the meaningful measure is material finer than 75 microns and whether those fines are non-plastic; IS 383:2016 permits a higher proportion in crushed sand than in natural sand.
Crushing method affects grain shape, which affects water demand and workability. Well-shaped manufactured sand behaves closer to natural sand in the mix.
For an RMC plant or a block manufacturer, batch-to-batch variation matters more than any single test result, because the mix design is set against expected material.
