What Goes Into WMM

A blend, not one aggregate size.

WMM is composed of crushed, graded aggregate fractions — nominally 40mm, 20mm, 10mm and 6mm, together with crusher-run screenings — proportioned by trial and error to achieve the gradation the applicable MoRTH table specifies. No single fraction is WMM on its own; the material only becomes WMM once the fractions are blended to the specified curve and mixed with controlled moisture.

"40mm aggregate" is not WMM. A single crushed fraction, however clean or well-produced, is one input to a WMM blend — not the finished material.

WMM vs WBM

Different Method

Water Bound Macadam (WBM) is the older method of binding coarse aggregate with screenings and water, compacted on site. WMM is plant-mixed with controlled moisture and forced mixing, and carries stricter aggregate requirements — its Aggregate Impact Value limit (≤30%) is tighter than WBM's. WBM remains a recognised construction method under applicable specifications; its use depends on the project's specification rather than WMM being an automatic replacement.

Is Crusher-Run the Same as WMM?

Not the Same Material

No. Crusher-run and WMM are not automatically the same material. WMM requires controlled proportioning to the specified grading envelope and controlled moisture mixing at a wet mix plant; crusher-run describes a mixed-size crusher output and does not by itself establish compliance with the WMM specification. Uncontrolled multi-size crusher output only becomes WMM once it is proportioned to the Clause 406 curve and mixed with controlled moisture.

Cannot Replace WMM

40mm, 20mm, 10mm and 6mm aggregate are each one particle size — inputs to a WMM blend, not WMM itself. WMM is a blend proportioned to a single 0–53mm grading envelope, not any one fraction supplied alone. Ordering a single aggregate size and using it as WMM does not meet Clause 406's grading requirement.

WMM uses a single grading envelope, nominally 0–53mm, per the applicable MoRTH table. Individual fractions are proportioned by trial and error to achieve that gradation — a stockpile of any one fraction is not itself WMM, and grading compliance is checked on the blended, mixed material.
