The figure refers to nominal size, not a guarantee that every particle measures 40mm. Nominal size describes the sieve the bulk of the material passes, with a defined distribution above and below.
Size matters for a practical reason. Larger aggregate presents less surface area per unit volume, so it typically requires less cement paste to coat — meaning a 40mm mix generally carries a lower paste demand than an equivalent 20mm mix, which is why 40mm is generally the more economical choice per cubic metre where the specification permits it. What it gives up is placement: it needs greater clear spacing and section depth, and does not move into congested reinforcement the way smaller aggregate does.
In Indian construction trade usage, terms such as metal or blue metal are commonly used for crushed stone aggregate, and 40mm metal generally refers to this product. Terminology varies by region and application, so confirm the size specification rather than relying on trade names alone when ordering.
IS 383:2016 sets grading limits for coarse aggregate by sieve analysis, defining the percentage of material expected to pass each sieve for a given nominal size. Well-graded aggregate generally produces better workability and more consistent results than poorly graded material. 40mm is used both as a single-size aggregate and blended with smaller fractions in a graded mix, depending on the mix design and application.
Reinforced-concrete use of 40mm aggregate is governed by member dimensions and reinforcement spacing under IS 456:2000 — larger aggregate needs more generous clear spacing and section depth, so suitability should always be verified against the project specification before ordering for an RCC member. Beyond grading, coarse aggregate for structural or mass concrete is generally assessed on particle shape, cleanliness and freedom from deleterious material, water absorption, specific gravity, and mechanical performance through crushing, impact and abrasion testing, using the relevant IS 2386 methods.
IS 456:2000, Clause 5.3.1 sets the maximum aggregate size for a reinforced-concrete member as the smallest of three checks: one-quarter of the member's minimum dimension, the clear spacing between reinforcement bars minus 5mm, and the clear cover minus 5mm. Whichever of the three gives the smallest figure is the actual ceiling for that member — not the concrete grade, and not whichever aggregate happens to be in stock.

The smallest figure governs — here, 20mm. That specific column requires 20mm aggregate regardless of concrete grade; 40mm would not meet its own geometry. Run this same check against your own member before specifying 40mm.
This example is illustrative only — actual aggregate selection must follow the structural drawings, concrete mix design and project specification prepared by the responsible engineer. 40mm aggregate's natural home is mass concrete and other large, less congested pours, which is precisely the domain IS 383:2016 Table 8 addresses for mass-concrete aggregate sizing.
40mm aggregate is used where the section is large enough and the reinforcement open enough to accommodate it — mass concrete, PCC, sub-base and foundation work. 40mm is not a general substitute for 20mm: for standard slabs, beams and columns with conventional reinforcement, 20mm is typically the appropriate choice. 40mm aggregate is a single coarse-aggregate size; GSB (Granular Sub-Base) is a blended, graded sub-base material meeting a sieve/grading curve under MoRTH Clause 401. Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) is a plant-mixed, moisture-conditioned base-course material under MoRTH Clause 406, produced by blending multiple aggregate fractions with water to a specified grading. 40mm aggregate is one of the size fractions that can feed into a WMM blend, but a single 40mm fraction is not WMM on its own.
